BATS
There are eight types of bat that live in this river valley area. Bats are endangered and protected at European level under the Habitat Regulations.

OSPREYS, SPARROWHAWKS, KESTRELS
These magnificent birds are all in this river valley and under threat of being disturbed.
NESTING BIRDS
Habitat includes woodland, farmland, river bank and floodplain. There are likely to be nesting birds. Kingfishers, Yellowhammers and other raptors have been sited along the River Wear.
HEDGROW
Ancient hederows and subsequently laid hedges exist on the current and proposed development site. Some hedges pre-date the enclosures which resulted in the field pattern which is comment today.
OTTERS
Otters have played along the River Wear near Newton Cap Viaduct. They are protected by European law.
HORSES & PONIES
There is a strong travelling culture in the area. Horses and ponies roam along river banks and are in one of the sites for the proposed car parks.
RARE BUTTERFLIES
The Dingy Skipper butterfly is among many butterflies in this area on a limestone habitat, and woodland and wildflower meadow flowers which pervade the verges around this area.
BADGERS
Many badgers live on site of this development and within the river valley area
